The Order is named after the Lady of the Seas, Navassa’s spiritual protector, who embodies the wisdom, mystery, and majesty of the waters.

The Most Royal & Illustrious Order of Our Lady of the Seas

The honors of a kingdom are among its most solemn acts: a sovereign's declaration, in the most public form, of what it values and whom it wishes to exalt. The Most Royal & Illustrious Order of Our Lady of the Seas is the highest Order of Knighthood of the Kingdom of Navassa, and the Crown's primary instrument for recognizing those who have rendered exemplary service, loyalty, or friendship to the Crown and its people.

The Order draws its inspiration from the Lady of the Seas, Navassa’s spiritual protector, who embodies the wisdom, mystery, and majesty of the waters. The order's motto is Sapientia Maris (Wisdom of the Sea). The Order's day is the Second of February.

Inductees are honored for rendering exemplary service, amity, or loyalty to The Crown or Royal House of Navassa.

The Order is composed of the Sovereign, who serves as Sovereign of the Order, and five grades:

Knight/Dame Grand Cross (GCOLS) — The highest grade of the Order, limited to 18 living members. The Royal Consort and heir-apparent are assigned to this grade. Supernumerary members are allowed: members of the Royal Family & House are referred to as Royal Knight/Dame Grand Cross; foreign micronational leaders are referred to as Knight/Dame Grand Cross Extraordinary. Knights and Dames Grand Cross are addressed as Sir or Dame before the forename, or as Chevalier, Chevalière, or Chevaliem before the surname following the forename and a comma. They are entitled to heraldic supporters and a circlet on a coat of arms.

Knight/Dame Grand Officer (GOLS) — Admitted in 32 numbers. Knights and Dames Grand Officer are addressed as Sir or Dame before the forename, or as Chevalier, Chevalière, or Chevaliem before the surname following the forename and a comma. They are entitled to a circlet on a coat of arms.

Knight/Dame Commander (COLS) — Admitted in unlimited numbers. Knights and Dames Commander are addressed as Sir or Dame before the forename, or as Chevalier, Chevalière, or Chevaliem before the surname following the forename and a comma. They are entitled to a circlet on a coat of arms.

Officer (OLS) — Admitted in unlimited numbers. Officers are entitled to a circlet on a coat of arms. Officers carry no style prefix or suffix.

Member (MLS) — Admitted in unlimited numbers. Members carry no style prefix or suffix and are entitled to no heraldic privileges.

The Order's insignia includes:

  • Sash, dark blue with two silver stripes, measuring 200 cm long and approx. 10 cm wide, worn over the left shoulder. Awarded to Knights and Dames Grand Cross only, to which the Badge is affixed.

  • Star, eight-pointed, with the center bearing the image of the Lady of the Seas — a crowned figure robed in white and seafoam, standing upon the waters with arms outstretched — with the Order's motto encircling it. Awarded to Knights and Dames Grand Cross, who wear it on the left breast, and to Knights and Dames Grand Officer, who wear it on the right breast.

  • Badge, eight-pointed, with four large rays alternating with four small rays. In the center is the image of the Lady of the Seas — a crowned figure robed in white and seafoam, standing upon the waters with arms outstretched — with the Order's motto encircling it. Awarded to Knights and Dames Grand Cross, affixed to the Sash; and to Knights and Dames Grand Officer, worn on the left breast suspended from a ribbon in dark blue with two silver stripes; and to Knights and Dames Commander, worn around the neck suspended from a ribbon necklet in dark blue with two silver stripes.

Awarded to Officers, worn on the left breast suspended from a ribbon in dark blue with two silver stripes with Rosette; and to Members, worn on the left breast suspended from a ribbon in dark blue with two silver stripes.

The Order is given as a personal gift from the Sovereign. Honorees who live within a 50-mile radius of Maison de la Reine may be invited to an investiture ceremony.

Disclaimer on titles & honors

The titles and honors of the Kingdom of Navassa are issued under the sovereign authority of the Crown and carry the full dignity and meaning of that authority within the kingdom and its community. They do not confer legal privileges under the laws of Haiti or any other recognized state, and holders should be mindful of macronational laws regarding the use of titles. The Crown issues these honors in recognition of those who uplift, serve, and inspire, and their worth is measured in that service, not in the approval of outside powers.
